The Yiewsley and West Drayton Cooperative Society was established in 1893 with 100 members and 
£100 shares capital now had 410 members and £1,200

25th September 1893 at DeBurgh Hall 
With Mr Lake as member Number 1 placed his one pond share (£500) and Mr C. Heron as President. 

 Yiewsley & West Drayton Co-Operative Society opened a Co-operative store at 31 and 32 Windsor Street, Uxbridge on Thursday 10th March 1910.

This was the Societies second store, having built up "Splendid business" at Yiewsley.

The Yiewsley & West Drayton Co-Operative Society reported it had over 500 member in 1910, most of whom were women

Mrs Gasson (Mrs M.A. Gasson of Acton ?) from the Wholesale Co-operative Union speaking at a Societies Hall in Yiewsley meeting in 1910 stated "many men were afraid to join the Society, for by doing so they would be endangering their position, and yet they called their land free England"




Finally merged into the London Co-operative Society in 1930.

Mr C. Heron was heavily involved with the establishment of Yiewsley and West Drayton Co-operative in September 1893

Was this Charles Heron a school master (St Matthews) born at Sowerby, West Yorkshire aged 37 at the time of the 1901 census.

In 1930 Yiewsley and West Drayton Co-operative merged with West London Co-Operative Society

NOTE:

Caroline Ganley 1879-1966 (later MP for Battersea) was also one of the most active women in the co-operative movement and was elected director of the West London Society in 1918.

The West London Society merged with the London Co-operative Society in 1921 and in 1942 she became the first woman president of the London Co-operative Society, at the time the largest retail society in the country with 792,000 members in that year and therefore a staggering achievement for a women.

She was an experienced and respected guildswoman, knowledgeable on such diverse subjects as tariffs and the consumer, married women's nationality rights, and the supply of milk to schoolchildren all themes close to the Guild’s campaigning heart since Margaret Llewelyn Davies. Ganley’s knowledge earned her the place as the only woman to represent England on the Cost of Living Inquiry Committee of 1936. In June 1943 she was honoured by the guild as one of the speakers at its diamond jubilee demonstration at the Royal Albert Hall.

Lyons - Corn-merge Veridique et Social - Co-operative

Attention has recently been called to the distinctive positionheld by the city of Lyons in the annals of co-operation in France. It was out of strikes and bloodshed that the first co-operative society of Lyons emerged, largely through the efforts of two earnest souls : Michel Demon and Joseph L. Reynier.

Michael Demon (born in 1803) owned a small silk factory, and his sympathies would naturally be with the employer. But brought in early manhood into touch with the socialist teaching of St. Simon and Fourier, he became one of the school whose object was " the association of workers of thought and of the workshop, and the establishment of a society of producers." In a book published in 1834, Demon declared that the remedy for the unrest of the people was " the peaceful organisation of industry and commerce." Joseph Reynier was a manager under Demon. Born in 1811, the only boy in a family of seven—all silk weavers—he early became a strong champion of the workers.

Unlike the 28 of Rochdale his ability brought him into some prominence in various spheres in Lyons. He died at the great age of 86, and in his will he wrote the touching lesson for his children and his colleagues : Aimez vous les uns les autres. In 1835 Demon and Reynier—par nobile fratrum—started the " Corn-merge Veridique et Social," in plain English, a co-operative society. It lived three years, and was then killed through bitter local influences. Like the phoenix, a new society," L'Avenir Regional," rose from the ashes which flourishes to-day.

Not so isolated, one may note, but that July 7th was celebrated in fitting fashion as the first Co-operators' Day. The names of Demon and Reynier are dear to the weavers of Lyons. At the unveiling of a monument to the memory of Reynier in 1920, M. Gaumont (a prominent co-operator) pronounced a glowing eulogium upon these brother pioneers.

The oration begins : " The tomb before which we here reunite for a solemn and grateful homage, is not that of a lord of the earth, of a hero in politics or war.

This modest monument is worthy of the modest man, a son of the people, who rests under this slab of stone." Further on we read :— "Let us piously consider the name of Michel Derrion, henceforth sacred to men of goodwill who, by millions, are grouped now in co-operation, with the same ideals.

By the side of him we will place the name of Joseph Reynier, associated with him during 10 years of misfortunes and difficulties, and which should shine in the same peaceful glory for co-operators of the entire world as those of Charles Howarth, James Smithies, and William Cooper, founders of the Rochdale Society."

Uxbridge Shop Workers Union 1906

National Amalgamamted Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks Union

Meeting of the Uxbridge branch of the National Amalgamamted Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks was held at Middleton Restaurant, Uxbridge 63 St Andrew's on Tuesday evening 17th April 2oth 1906.

The Uxbridge branch being active as early as 1903.

The National Amalgamamted Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks union had been formed at a meeting held between the East London Shop Assistants Association and the Warehouse Assistant's Union and established on at a conference held in Birmingham on 29th and 30th March 1891. In 1947 the union merged tobcome USDAW.

At the 1906 Uxbridge branch meeting the speaker was Mr J, Turner organiser L.D.C (London District Committee ?) and Mr Thacker, Chairman of LDC.

Mr Turner condemed the "Living In" scandal (forced to live above the shop) and spoke of the need for better wages and improvement of the treatment.

Mr W. Watson is the Secretary of the Uxbridge Branch National Amalgamated Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks union.


Emila Dilke was involved with the Women's Protective and Provident League, later the Women's Trade union League (WTUL), from near its inception in 1874 and she served as President of the WTUL for many years until her death.
